Chilla’s Art Shinkansen 0 is a first-person psychological horror game that takes place inside a Japanese high-speed train. The player controls a passenger who suddenly finds himself trapped in a repeating sequence of train cars during a night journey. At first the train appears normal, with passengers sitting quietly and luggage stored above the seats. However, as the player moves from one car to the next, small changes begin to appear in the environment. The objective is to identify these unusual details and react correctly in order to continue progressing through the train.
The central mechanic of Chilla’s Art Shinkansen 0 is the repetition of nearly identical train compartments. Each time the player walks through a door, another carriage appears with the same arrangement of seats, windows, and passengers. Because the layout rarely changes, the player must observe the environment carefully to detect differences. An object may move to a different position, a passenger may change behavior, or something unexpected may appear inside the car. The player must decide whether the current compartment contains an anomaly before moving forward or returning to the previous section.
The game is built around several simple mechanics that guide how the player explores the train and identifies anomalies.
These mechanics rely heavily on observation and memory.
Throughout the journey in Chilla’s Art Shinkansen 0, the player encounters several passengers sitting inside the train. Most appear calm and remain in their seats, but their behavior can change as the loops continue. Some passengers disappear, others move to different seats, and occasionally new figures appear without explanation. These events create uncertainty and force the player to pay attention to even minor changes in the environment.
