Cry of Fear is a first-person psychological horror game that combines survival mechanics, combat, exploration, and puzzle solving inside a dark urban environment. The story follows Simon Henriksson, a young man who wakes up alone in a deserted city after being hit by a car. While searching for a way home, Simon encounters disturbing creatures, abandoned streets, and nightmare-like locations connected to his mental condition. The game focuses heavily on fear, isolation, trauma, and survival in hostile environments.

Exploring the Nightmare City

The gameplay takes place across different parts of a ruined Scandinavian city including apartment complexes, subway tunnels, forests, hospitals, and underground facilities. Players explore these locations while collecting keys, solving puzzles, and searching for weapons or medical supplies. Many areas suddenly transform into distorted nightmare versions filled with stronger enemies and environmental changes that alter the path forward.

The game is divided into several chapters with different objectives and environments. Early sections focus on exploration and survival, while later chapters introduce stronger enemies, larger locations, and more difficult puzzles. Simon can carry only a limited number of items at once, forcing players to manage inventory carefully. Weapons include pistols, shotguns, knives, axes, and other tools found throughout the city. Some sections also require using a flashlight or mobile phone while fighting enemies in complete darkness.

Survival Horror and Resource Management

One of the main mechanics in Cry of Fear is balancing combat with survival. Ammunition and healing items are limited, making every encounter dangerous. Some enemies move extremely fast and attack unexpectedly, forcing players to decide whether to fight directly or escape through alternate routes.

Main gameplay activities include:

  • exploring abandoned city locations
  • solving environmental puzzles
  • managing limited inventory space
  • fighting monsters with firearms and melee weapons
  • collecting keys, notes, and medical supplies
  • unlocking multiple endings through choices

Story Choices and Multiple Endings

The story gradually reveals that many events inside the city are connected to Simon’s trauma, depression, and psychological struggles. Different decisions throughout the game affect the final ending and determine how Simon’s story concludes. Some endings reveal hopeful outcomes, while others focus on violence, isolation, and mental collapse.

The game also includes a separate cooperative campaign where up to four players control police officers trapped inside the same nightmare world. Additional survival modes and unlockable content become available after finishing the main story.
