Danganronpa follows Makoto Naegi, an ordinary student selected to attend Hope’s Peak Academy alongside classmates who possess specialized “Ultimate” talents. Shortly after entering the building, the students discover that the exits have been sealed. A mechanical bear named Monokuma announces the condition for graduation: a student must murder a classmate and avoid being identified during the following Class Trial. Choosing the wrong culprit results in everyone except the killer being executed.

Daily Life Behind Locked Doors

During Daily Life, the player explores the academy from a first-person perspective, speaks with classmates, and follows story events. Additional floors and rooms become accessible as the plot progresses. Free Time sections allow Makoto to meet selected students and give them presents. These conversations reveal personal information and can unlock skills that provide practical advantages during trials.

Evidence Becomes Ammunition

After a body is discovered, the chapter enters Deadly Life. Makoto must inspect the crime scene, interview witnesses, and search related locations. Important findings are recorded as Truth Bullets in the electronic handbook. The investigation ends once all required evidence has been collected, but the player must understand how the clues connect before entering the Class Trial.

A complete case generally involves:

  • Examine rooms and objects during regular school exploration.
  • Speak with students to advance the current story event.
  • Spend Free Time with chosen characters and offer suitable presents.
  • Inspect the victim, surrounding area, and possible escape routes.
  • Compare witness statements with physical evidence.
  • Select Truth Bullets that contradict statements during debates.
  • Reconstruct the sequence of the crime in the Closing Argument.

Six Chapters of Investigation and Debate

The main story contains a prologue, six chapters, and an epilogue. Most chapters are divided into Daily Life, Deadly Life, and a Class Trial. Trials include several minigames. Nonstop Debate requires shooting evidence at contradictory phrases, Hangman’s Gambit involves forming an important word from letters, and Bullet Time Battle uses rhythm-based inputs to overcome resistance. The Closing Argument asks players to arrange comic panels in chronological order.
