The first thing to decide in Dmod is what to put into the game world. An empty location can become a shooting range, a place for testing vehicles, or a battlefield filled with NPCs. Players control most of what appears around them through the spawn menu. There is no main story, scripted campaign, or sequence of missions. The sandbox is designed around creating situations and experimenting with the available mechanics.
Every session begins with choosing a map. Locations contain different layouts, buildings, and areas where players can place objects. The level editor provides another way to create environments instead of using existing ones. Players can position props, combine separate pieces, and construct structures with the tool gun. The welding function connects objects, while the remover tool deletes unwanted items. Physics interactions become important when structures are hit, moved, or exposed to explosions.
Dmod allows players to introduce NPCs into their scenes and control whether their artificial intelligence is active. This makes it possible to arrange characters before starting combat or use them as targets for experiments. Nextbots provide another type of character interaction, while ragdolls react to physical impacts.
The game includes several tools and mechanics:
Players who prefer combat can choose activities outside the regular sandbox. Zombies mode involves fighting undead enemies, while Free for All and Team Deathmatch focus on battles between players. A deathrun map offers obstacle-based gameplay. These modes provide different objectives, but they do not form a connected story or a traditional level progression system.
To play Dmod, choose a map and use the spawn menu to select the objects or characters you need. The physics gun lets you adjust their positions, while weapons and other tools allow you to interact with the scene. You can experiment with enemy factions, create vehicle obstacles, or test how objects behave during explosions. There is no requirement to finish one activity before starting another.
