Don’t Scream is a horror experience designed to challenge players within the game, and in real life through their microphone. Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game tasks players with surviving a haunted forest where every noise they make can end the session. Players must remain quiet, composed, and alert as they explore a dark, unpredictable environment filled with dynamic scares. The goal is simple: stay alive for ten full minutes without making a sound.
Unlike typical horror games, Don’t Scream uses sound detection as its core mechanic. The player’s microphone is constantly monitored, and any loud noise — a scream, a gasp, or even a laugh — immediately causes the game to reset. The pressure to remain silent adds a psychological layer that enhances the tension. The forest setting changes with every playthrough, making it difficult to predict where threats will appear or how they will behave.
Players control their movement with standard keys, but time only progresses when they move. Standing still freezes the clock, which means progress is tied directly to exploration and bravery. Along the way, players encounter various elements designed to provoke a reaction, both visually and through sound design.
These components work together to create an experience where control and awareness are constantly tested.
Because of the game’s use of dynamic events and audio input, no two sessions are the same. The environment and timing of scares shift with every restart, which keeps the experience fresh and frightening. The relics and battery systems introduce small objectives that distract from the primary challenge, making silence harder to maintain. Success depends on focus, timing, and the ability to suppress instinctive reactions to fear.
Don’t Scream offers an original take on interactive horror by incorporating the player’s real-world behavior into gameplay. It blurs the line between player and character, forcing a physical response to have in-game consequences. The result is an intense and personal horror experience that rewards composure and punishes panic. Whether completed or failed, each attempt leaves a lasting impression.
