Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy is a physics-based climbing game about a man whose lower body is trapped inside a metal cauldron. He cannot walk or jump normally and must scale a mountain using a long hammer. There is no conventional story explaining the character’s situation or destination. The objective is simply to reach the top while Bennett Foddy comments on frustration, failure, digital culture, and the player’s repeated attempts.
The hammer follows the direction of the player’s input and interacts with rocks, trees, furniture, buildings, and other surfaces. Its head can be placed on an object to push the cauldron upward or hooked over an edge to pull the character closer. Wide circular swings generate momentum, while fast downward movements can launch the cauldron into the air. Since there is no separate jump button, every action depends on positioning the hammer correctly.
The route begins among rocks and trees before continuing through piles of construction materials, furniture, playground equipment, and household objects. Later sections include narrow ledges, vertical walls, unstable-looking structures, and obstacles that require a specific movement technique. The entire mountain is connected as one continuous area. A fall can return the player to a nearby surface or erase a large part of the current progress.
Important climbing techniques include:
Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy does not contain numbered levels, upgrades, extra abilities, enemies, or collectible equipment. The mountain’s recognizable sections function as informal stages, but the game does not protect progress with checkpoints. The current position is preserved when leaving normally, yet a fall remains permanent. Reaching the summit completes the main challenge, while repeated playthroughs allow players to improve their completion time.
