HOW MANY DUDES is a roguelike autobattler focused on building large armies of unusual fighters called Dudes. Developed by Butterscotch Shenanigans, the game revolves around answering absurd combat questions through automated battles. Players recruit different types of Dudes, combine team synergies, and attempt to defeat enemies ranging from gorillas and giant ducks to supernatural creatures and gods. Every run changes depending on the recruited units, relics, and upgrade combinations selected throughout progression.
The gameplay is built around preparation and strategic unit management rather than direct combat control. Players recruit Dudes between battles and organize them into formations before fights begin automatically. Different Dude families provide unique bonuses and abilities, encouraging players to experiment with combinations and synergies. Some units specialize in close combat, while others focus on ranged attacks, resource generation, or support effects during battles.
Every run introduces randomized upgrades, enemy encounters, and collectible relics that alter gameplay systems. Certain relics improve damage output, revive defeated units, or change how abilities interact with one another. Since resources and recruits vary between sessions, players must adapt strategies constantly instead of following a single optimized build. Defeated runs reset progression, but accumulated experience and unlocked content expand future possibilities.
The game uses exaggerated humor and chaotic combat scenarios as a central part of its identity. Battles often involve ridiculous enemy concepts and oversized armies colliding inside crowded arenas. The visual style combines cartoon animation with large-scale physics-driven fights where dozens of units attack simultaneously. Dialogue, enemy descriptions, and event scenarios are intentionally absurd, reinforcing the comedic atmosphere throughout gameplay.
Replayability comes from the large number of possible team combinations and the procedural structure of each run. Different Dude families, relic interactions, and random encounters create varied outcomes even after repeated sessions. The game attracted attention online through demo releases, gameplay videos, and comparisons to autobattlers such as Balatro and Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. Community discussions frequently focus on unusual builds, high-level synergy strategies, and the question that defines the entire game: how many dudes are actually enough?
