Magic spreads throughout Conrad and Sally’s home after the Crablock is removed from the Cat’s crate in The Cat in the Hat. The escaped energy transforms rooms and household objects into unstable worlds filled with enemies and obstacles. Larry Quinn takes the lock and follows the magic because he wants to use its power. The Cat begins searching for both the scattered energy and the missing Crablock pieces.
Players begin in the living room and enter stages through objects affected by magic. Completing available worlds opens routes to areas such as the kitchen, garage, and upper floor. The appearance of the house changes as magic is recovered, providing a visible record of progress. Conrad, Sally, and the Fish also provide instructions about the current objective and the next accessible location.
The Cat travels through side-scrolling environments by running, jumping, gliding with his umbrella, and striking the ground from above. His bubble ability captures certain enemies and hazardous substances. A filled bubble can be carried and launched toward another target, allowing players to attack from a distance, break barriers, or activate parts of the environment.
The levels contain several types of items:
There are ten main levels, several battles against Quinn’s machine, and additional hidden or bonus content. Collecting all the magic in a stage returns the corresponding object or room to its original condition. Players can finish a level without finding every optional item, but complete exploration is required to obtain all gems. The secret Mystical Mirror stage becomes available after the full gem collection has been assembled.
Contact with enemies, projectiles, or dangerous parts of the environment removes health. Falling into a pit costs a life and returns the Cat to the latest checkpoint. If no lives remain, the current stage must be restarted. Boss encounters work differently from normal platforming sections: Quinn attacks from a machine that can only be damaged at specific moments. The player must avoid its movements, prepare a bubble projectile, and aim at the exposed exhaust. Each victory returns another part of the Crablock. Careful players should inspect upper platforms and paths located behind foreground objects, since keys and magic are often positioned away from the direct route to the exit.
