EA Sports UFC 6 combines simulated MMA bouts with several forms of solo and multiplayer progression. Players can select established UFC athletes, create a new fighter, recreate scheduled matchups, or compete for rankings. The roster supports different approaches to combat, including boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and submissions. Individual athletes have specific attributes, animations, Signature Strikes, and Flow States that encourage the use of their real fighting tendencies.
The game has a dedicated story mode called The Legacy. Its protagonist, Chris Carter, is a former collegiate wrestler attempting to build a professional MMA career and follow his father’s example. Coach Thompson helps him develop at Believe MMA, while another fighter, Danny Lopez, becomes his rival. The campaign covers three phases, beginning with regional competition and ending with Chris entering the UFC. Story choices, social media reactions, and changing relationships accompany the scheduled fights.
Combat takes place through standing exchanges, clinches, takedowns, and ground positions. Players must manage health and stamina while defending different areas of the body. Real-Time Contact determines how strikes connect and how fighters react to impact. Momentum can activate one of 30 Flow States when an athlete consistently follows an appropriate strategy. A counterstriker benefits from timing and distance, while a grappler develops momentum by controlling positions and completing reversals.

There are no conventional stages with fixed level numbers. In UFC Career Mode, progression is measured through rankings, Skill Points, attributes, learned moves, championships, and completed fights. Players can continue Chris Carter’s career, create an original athlete, or control an existing UFC fighter. Training camps improve fitness, while promotional choices affect hype, money, fandom, and rivalries. Online Career applies a related upgrade system to matches against other players.
