Army of Darkness places the player inside an armed helicopter during a global attack by zombies and other monsters. The remaining human defenses can stop a limited number of creatures, but they cannot contain the complete horde. The pilot must therefore destroy most enemies before they pass through the protected area. The game has a basic survival plot rather than character-driven scenes: humanity is under attack, and the helicopter serves as its main aerial defense.
The helicopter remains in the upper part of the battlefield while enemies move below it. The player aims the mounted machine gun and fires at individual targets before they cross the screen. Bullets travel toward the selected point, so shots must be adjusted for moving enemies. Continuous fire can control groups, but concentrating on one durable monster may allow weaker creatures to escape.
Enemy types have different amounts of health. Basic monsters may be eliminated with a few machine-gun rounds, while stronger units can absorb prolonged fire. Missiles inflict greater damage and should be reserved for durable targets or dense groups. Rocket supplies appear on the ground and must be shot to collect them, forcing the player to choose between attacking the horde and replenishing heavy ammunition.
The standard combat sequence includes:
The campaign contains 25 levels. Each stage requires the player to kill a specified number of monsters while remaining below the permitted number of escapes. Early levels introduce small groups with limited health. Later missions increase the number of attackers and combine weaker zombies with enemies that require several hits or multiple missiles. A stage ends successfully when its elimination target is reached without the defensive limit being exceeded.
